Virscient leads discussion on ultra-low latency wireless audio

BEIT Conference, NAB Show 2025

Virscient is invited to the NAB show in Las Vegas (April2025), to present a panel discussion on ultra-low latency audio, and how the benchmarks are shifting.

Jonny McClintock (Virscient, Audio Codecs, and Antennaware) leads a panel of experts as they review the current standards and investigate new technologies that deliver latency below 5 ms over Bluetooth. The panel discussion forms part of NAB Show’s Broadcast Engineering and IT Conference.

Latency matters!

In audio latency, the definition of “low-enough” latency varies from performer to performer, although most audio experts agree that lower is better, and solutions like the classic Bluetooth A2DP just aren’t good enough.

This panel discussion will start with an explanation of the limitations of Bluetooth Classic, the vast improvements delivered with Bluetooth LE Audio, and unpack the current situation for live performers. The team will then look at some research from the Audio Engineering Society before exploring the options for ultra-low latency audio – including our very own LiveOnAir.

The latency and ability to function as a body-worn device (addressing body-blocking) are helped by Audio Codecs Skylark and Antennaware’s Bodywave antennas. Skylark is a 24-bit 48kHz audio codec with a latency of 1.5ms. Bodywave can improve link margin by up to 20dB, which will help deliver a glitch-free wireless audio experience.

Details on this session  can be found on the NAB Show page HERE.
